The 2008/09 season got underway last night with a heated Charity Shield match between St Georges and Peel.
Peel came out on top, defeating the league champions 3-1 as tempers frayed at the Bowl.
Peel manager Rick Holden was delighted with his side's victory but said the match got bad tempered at times.
"The referee had a word with the players about discipline and one or two didn't get the message, they obviously want to win but it has to improve."
The westerners led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a Kevin Megson penalty.
The advantage was increased after the interval by Neil Birchenough before substitute Brian Gartland put St. George's back in the contest with a wonder goal. Peel secured the silverware when Lee Gale hit the third.
