Rob Paternostro left to rue slow Leicester Riders start

Coach Rob Paternostro says a below-par first-half show cost Leicester Riders dear in the defeat by Mersey Tigers.

Riders lost 83-77 at home on Saturday despite a gutsy final-period fightback which saw them edge ahead late on.

Paternostro told BBC Radio Leicester: "At half-time we were a little disappointed to be down 10. I thought we could have played a little better.

"We had a couple of stretches where we gave up easy baskets and they come back to haunt you."

Riders trailed by 11 points early in the fourth quarter. But six points by Ryan Zamroz in a 19-7 run put Riders 72-71 ahead only for Tigers to storm back.

Nate Reinking put the visitors ahead with a three in the final minute and a combination of Tafari Toney and Andrew Sullivan kept their cool from the free-throw line to seal the two points and move to the top of the BBL table.

Paternostro added: "In the second half we corrected some things and we were right there.

"It came down to a couple of plays at the end and they made them and we didn't, and that's the way it goes. They are a good side."
