The Belfast Giants' winning streak continued with victory over Trondheim Panthers in the opening game of the Aherne Trophy at the Odyssey on Friday night.

The Competition - ice hockey's equivalent to the Ryder Cup - features teams from the Superleague and Norway.

The Superleague leaders, though, put paid to an early Nordic attack in the competition.

Dave Whistle's side opened the scoring in four minutes when captain Paul Kruse found the target after good approach work by Kory Korlander.

Fighting

Two goals in the second period wrapped up the game for the Giants.

On 35.07 Doug Macdonald found Colin Ward in space and to fire home goal number two.

Just over three minutes later Kevin Reihl collected number three with a great assist by Rob Stevens.

The game ended early for Todd Kelman and Lee Sorochan who were given a 10-minute misconduct call after a bout of fighting with Orjan Naess and Mariuis Andersen.

Giants now play Frisk/Asker Tigers on Saturday night (1900GMT).
