Belmont Boys' Secondary School

The school prides itself on its well-rounded students, many of whom go on to make a valuable contribution to Trinidad and Tobago.

Belmont Boys' 432 students, aged 11 to 18, work hard in lessons, play football and cricket and are athletics mad.

The school strives to develops their pupils' academic, sporting and musical talents. The choir and the under-15 cricket team are some of the school's current stars.

We asked Lucia Raes, the head teacher, what they would give visitors to the school to remember them by and she answered a weighing scale to represent the well balanced students.

Jehue at Belmont Boys' Secondary School

On his first day at the school in 2003, Jehue was intimidated by the teachers and older students but soon settled into lessons, sports practice and playing volleyball and soccer in the school yard.

The Trinidadian sports star has happy memories of his time at Belmont Boys' including banana boat rides on a field trip to Guyana, reaching the under 14 football final, even though they lost, and playing blind man's buff.

Jehue and his classmates also managed to upset the school's neighbours when one ball that went for six flew over the wall and broke a car windscreen.

The hurdler is remembered for being a model student and striking a balance between school work with training. He excelled at maths and physics but was not a fan of history lessons.

Jehue left the school in 2008 to complete his studies at Queen's Royal College.

Sporting talent

Jehue was a talented cricketer but switched his focus to athletics after his PE teacher, Mr King, encouraged him to take up the hurdles.

The school supported the athlete's development and Jehue comments that "I always felt that the school was 100% behind me and showed me the different directions my life could take".

The students travel to the school from the suburbs surrounding Trinidad and Tobago's capital, Port of Spain and speak English and Creole at home.

Working hard at school is not always seen as a priority by students' parents but the school tries to counter parental apathy and instil the value of education in the boys and their families.

Inspiration for London 2012

Students and staff at Belmont Boys' are excited about London 2012 and will be cheering on Jehue and other Caribbean athletes.

Jehue's in close contact with the school and has made regular appearances at awards ceremonies. His achievements motivate current students and show them what can be achieved with hard work and dedication.

World Olympic Dreams

Jehue is one of the athletes being tracked as London 2012 approaches and they strive to make their Olympic dreams a reality.
