Bandits should be proud - Waite

Speedway

Berwick Bandits promoter Peter Waite believes the club can be proud despite bowing out of the Young Shield final with a 96-89 defeat by Workington.

Bandits were unfancied at the beginning of the season but registered a sixth-place finish in the League and Waite is full of praise for the whole club.

Waite told BBC Radio Newcastle; "It's a fairytale that we reached a final.

"It is the first time in 20 years and that has got to be a massive achievement," he added.

It was an emotional climax for Waite, who announced he was selling the club prior to Berwick's qualification for the final.

And he acknowledged he will find it difficult to come to terms with the fact he will no longer be involved with speedway.

"There's been a lot of pressure over the last two weeks and it's been a rollercoaster.

"We gave it 110%, all the guys put themselves on the line and there was some fantastic racing. I feel a bit of numbness really.

"The passion to live the dream, to take something to a final, what more can you do? My life needs to move forward and I can't give the time to both aspects."
