The genial Spaniard's last appearances were in 2006, when he stood in for Juan Pablo Montoya at McLaren for half a year after the Colombian upped sticks to Nascar in the middle of the season. De la Rosa did a solid job that year, with a best result an impressive second in the rain-hit Hungarian Grand Prix. His last full season was his second with Jaguar in 2002, when he often outqualified team-mate Eddie Irvine but struggled to keep pace with the Northern Irishman in races. Before that, he had spent two years with the struggling Arrows team in 1999. But as seven years as McLaren's test driver confirm, De la Rosa is full of experience in F1, and it is this wisdom that Sauber are hoping to benefit from by signing him up to partner the raw but promising Japanese Kamui Kobayashi.
