F1 teams to appeal against ruling

The race ended in farce when seven teams pulled out following safety concerns over their Michelin tyres.

"It would be a decision taken on grounds of safety," said FIA president Max Mosley.

Mosley also stated that the FIA would investigate the safety of Michelin tyres before any decision is reached.

"We have asked Michelin for details of all the failures they have had in the last two years," he added.

"This must be looked at very carefully and we would have to have independent experts because we don't have experts on tyre technology."

However, Michelin has stated that it would oppose proposals for a single tyre manufacturer.

"Elsewhere, unique sets of tyres are used and this has not stopped accidents and it does not guarantee security," Michelin deputy director Frederic Henry-Biabaud told The Guardian.

Michelin offers refund to US fans

"We are firmly against the idea as any sport should include competition."

The three teams teams that did race in Indianapolis - Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi - all use Bridgestone tyres.

In an attempt to restore Formula One's standing in America, Michelin has promised to refund ticket-holders who turned up in Indianapolis as well as distributing free tickets for next year's race.

The seven teams that pulled out of the event after the parade lap were found guilty on two of the five charges they faced.

Their punishment will be delayed until 14 September and six of the teams have already said they will appeal.
