David Coulthard won the praise of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner after finishing fourth in Australia.
Horner said Coulthard had driven an "unbelievable" race on his debut for the team that was formerly Jaguar.
"To be fourth on merit is a fantastic result," said Horner, who saw his other driver Christian Klien finish seventh.
"It gives us a real solid platform. We have achieved our initial target of respectability and now that target has to be a podium," he added.
"Considering we were reasonably late developing the car, the potential is
there to be unleashed I think."
Coulthard was slightly more cautious in his approach.
"We wouldn't have been up here if it wasn't for the unsual conditions of qualifying but I have to be happy with fourth."
The Scot staged a race-long battle with Williams driver Mark Webber and was second for a large part of the afternoon.
But he lost places to Ferrari's Rubens Barrichello and Renault's Fernando Alonso at the second pit stops.
"I lost a lot of time in traffic - I hit a Minardi and seemed to pass about six Jordans out there," the Scot said.
"All it would have taken was track position and I could have held off Alonso."
