Aussies given a boost
Lleyton Hewitt
Hewitt knows that time is on his side
BBC commentator and former British number one John Lloyd looks back on Saturday's action at Wimbledon and gives his view on the first week of the tournament.

After the Lions' victory in Brisbane, Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter gave Australia a lift on Centre Court - and they needed it.

Having said that, Hewitt wasn't that impressive but he got through.

El Aynaoui played a lot better than I thought he would. I had expected it to be much easier for Hewitt.

But he wasn't quite as sharp as usual and looked a bit flat at times.

It wouldn't be Wimbledon without something happening involving Jelena Dokic and her dad

He can't afford to do that because he's a 'grubber'. He's got to be at you all the time, running down balls, because he can't rely on picking up cheap points with a big booming serve such as say Sampras.

I just wonder if the number of matches he has played in the last month is taking its effect on him, but he has a day off now and he needs to recharge his batteries.

I was glad to see Rafter come through against Hicham Arazi as he is one of the few grass court players still in tennis.

It's nice to see him doing well but he will have to start raising his standards in the second week and iron out a few kinks in his game.

Andre Agassi had an easy path through against Nicolas Massu but like I said you can never depend on Yevgeny Kafelnikov because he is so up and down.

I think he served three double-faults in a row when serving for the fourth set against Guillermo Canas.

That is beyond belief and it is a game he should have won.

There has been some matches of decent quality, but also a lot of poor ones

It wouldn't be Wimbledon without something happening involving Jelena Dokic and her dad, but I have a sneaky feeling we could be seeing her around for a bit longer.

Lindsay Davenport will have it all to do to come through against the Australian on Monday.

So the first week of Wimbledon is over and how will we look back on it.

In my commentating role I get to see all the best matches on the feature courts, but there is a lot of other tennis going on that is not of such a great standard.

I think particularly in the men's game the grass court play is diminishing. Not enough of the players know how to play on grass.

There may be more rallies now but I'm not convince there is much thought going into them. The subtleties are vanishing.

There have been some great stories - Cowan, Capriati, Henman and Rusedski - and there has been some matches of decent quality.

But also a lot of poor ones.
