Full marks to Greg
![]() Greg Rusedski gets 10/10 from John Lloyd
BBC commentator and former British number one John Lloyd looks back on Friday's action at Wimbledon.
The Centre Court crowd knew that for Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski Friday's matches were the real deal and they got behind them 110% which was great to see. Tim had a nasty match against Sjeng Schalken and will not have relished playing him. Schalken can string points together quickly and I was a little concerned when he took the opening set. But Tim came back well although I felt his second serve was sitting up a bit too much because he was putting too much spin on it.
Greg was fantastic. He started off well and basically didn't give Juan Carlos Ferrero any chance. He didn't try to work his way into the match he just went straight for it and Ferrero could not handle the pace. Ferrero looked bemused as to what was going on. He wants more time to set up points but you don't get that on grass and he was always on the back foot. Greg's serve was good, he was smooth whenever he had crisis points, not that there were many. His second serve was good, he barely missed a volley and he was solid from the back of the court. It was a real 10/10 performance. The match between Goran Ivanisevic and Andy Roddick was a real case of a Wimbledon veteran up against a grass court novice. I thought it would be interesting to see how Roddick would cope, but though he played well, Goran took it to a different level. Goran loves this tournament and with his career now going the wrong way I think Wimbledon has given him a lift. He hasn't come out and set a retirement date but I think in the back of his mind he is maybe thinking this could be his last year and he wants to make the most of it here.
I have to admit I was not that impressed by Pete Sampras in his victory over Sargis Sargsian, despite winning in three sets. As usual he did what he had to do though and just turned up the pace whenever it was required of him. Jennifer Capriati is still looking good. I thought she may have a problem in the first week after her exploits in France, but now she is through that she is going to be very dangerous. Serena Williams also looked very impressive, more so at the moment than Venus. Serena and Jennifer could be set for a quarter-final clash and if so that could be a beauty.
