Tales of experience and youth
![]() Hewitt knows that time is on his side
BBC commentator and former British number one John Lloyd looks back on Thursday's action at Wimbledon.
We saw the best of the old and the new in the men's game on Thursday. Lleyton Hewitt mounted a magnificent comeback to beat Taylor Dent on Centre Court, but he'll be aware that both Andre Agassi and Pat Rafter were also impressive winners. Their experience certainly helps, but it is a little bit different for the likes of Hewitt and Andy Roddick. Every match is still important to them but in the back of their mind they always know that there are other years.
It was difficult to really gauge Andre on his performance because Jamie Delgado did not really push him, but he was taking the ball on the top of the bounce and looking very fit. Rafter seems to be over his shoulder problems and the pair look on collision course for the semi-finals. To reach that though there are a few in their way, such as Hewitt. The man with the best draw it seems is Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
He doesn't seem to have the stamina or be mentally strong enough to stay the pace in a Grand Slam, but he had too much for Arvind Parmar. < In the women's draw Lindsay Davenport played pretty well against Alicia Molik. But for me the sharpness is not there for Lindsay having missed so much tennis.
Dokic is a very good grass player and is looking dangerous. Lindsay really bucked the trend when she won Wimbledon because her mobility is not her strong point and I think Dokic could find that out. Another who I think is lacking match sharpness is Venus Williams. Injuries and other reasons have seen her miss a lot of action and I don't think you can afford to go into a Grand Slam without the full preparation. Venus can still get through her half of the draw though because she is such a good athlete.
