A superb boundary from Ridley Jacobs off the final ball gave the West Indies a three-wicket victory over South Africa in the first one-day international.

The home side needed eight to win from the last over and were two runs short with one ball remaining as they looked to surpass the South Africa total of 200 all out.

But Jacobs threw caution to the win and launched his bat, successfully, at Allan Donald's full toss for a thrilling win.

Jacobs was fortunate not to have been dismissed earlier after a television replay, not used by the field umpire, revealed that he had been run out by Mark Boucher the previous ball.

Brian Lara (54) and Carl Hooper (43) provided a solid base for the West Indies to build upon as they chased the modest target.

Solid bowling from Shaun Pollock and Donald threatened to ruin their day, before Jacobs stepped up to take all the glory.

Earlier, Neil McGarrell claimed three wickets to reduce South Africa to 200 all out.

The West Indies spinner took three for 32 in an unbroken spell to check South Africa after the tourists had made a promising start.

Fellow spinners Hooper and Marlon Samuels took two wickets each as South Africa were unable to mount any substantial partnerships after McGarrell broke a second wicket stand of 64 between Gary Kirsten and Jacques Kallis.

Kallis went for a big hit off McGarrell's sixth delivery and was caught at long off.

Three overs later Kirsten was bowled around his legs by West Indies captain Hooper, after making top score of 38.

Jonty Rhodes made a bright 36, Neil McKenzie hit 21 and in-form skipper Shaun Pollock made 26 not out, running out of partners as the innings subsided.

South Africa had made a flying start when 10 runs were scored off the first over from Mervyn Dillon, with Herschelle Gibbs hitting two boundaries. But a direct hit run-out by Brian Lara at cover ended Gibbs' brief belligerence.

Kirsten and Kallis seemed to be reviving their side's fortunes before Kallis was caught. Hooper took two for 45 and fellow offspinner Marlon Samuels two for 18.

West Indies handed a first one-day appearance to opening batsman Leon Garrick, who made his Test debut in the fifth Test.

South Africa gave an international debut to all-rounder Justin Ontong.
