Seve Ballesteros
Ballesteros is one of Europe's most successful and influential golfers

Golf legend Seve Ballesteros has returned to his home in northern Spain to start chemotherapy treatment after undergoing surgery for a brain tumour.

The five-time major winner was released from a Madrid hospital on 9 December and has now returned to Pedrena.

"I have started my first chemotherapy session," said Ballesteros on his website. "At this point, my thought is to rest and follow the neurosurgeons."

He said he would give a further update on his condition in January.

The 51-year-old, who has won the Open three times and two Masters titles, was admitted to hospital in early October after fainting at Madrid Airport.

Since then he has undergone four separate operations, including a 6½-hour procedure on 24 October to remove the tumour.

He retired from competitive playing in 2007 because of back trouble and since then has mainly concentrated on designing courses.
