Halsall breaks backstroke record

Halsall is representing the Plymouth Leander Swimming Club.

Grant Halsall finished a creditable seventh in the 100m backstroke at the British Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield on Tuesday.

On his way to the final the 15-year-old set a new Isle of Man senior and junior record with a time of 56.75 seconds.

Halsall was the youngest finalist by over three years and his time of 57.00 seconds was one second faster than the previous British record for his age.

Liam Tancock won the race, lowering his own British record to 53.20 seconds.

Marco Loughran took silver in 54.51 and Christopher Walker-Hebborn took the bronze with a time of 54.96.

On Wednesday Halsall goes in the heats for the 200m backstroke followed by the 100m butterfly on Thursday morning.

The second day of competition saw the swimmers smash four British and one European record.
