Wigan's Australian midfielder Josip Skoko has received a work permit and is free to link up with his team-mates.
The 31-year-old had already agreed terms on a new contract, but while the Home Office approved the permit he had to train on his own before the season.
"This is great news for us - it feels like another new signing," said Latics boss Chris Hutchings.
"Josip is an intelligent footballer with a real maturity and presence on the field."
Skoko, who joined Wigan on a free transfer from Turkish side Genclerbirligi in 2005, had offers from other clubs but was always keen to stay at the JJB.
"I thought he was excellent for us last season and got better with every game," added Hutchings.
"I have no doubt with another year of Premier League experience under his belt he will be even better."
