Bouazza eyes Cup upset
By Caroline Cheese

Hameur Bouazza
Bouazza's goal against Plymouth sent Watford into the semi-finals
Watford midfielder Hameur Bouazza already reckons this has been his best season yet - and it could be about to get even better.

The 22-year-old has hit a rich vein of form heading into Saturday's FA Cup semi-final after scoring twice in the Easter Monday win over Portsmouth.

Then there was the small matter of the sweet strike which earned Watford their place in the semi-finals at the expense of Plymouth.

And Bouazza insists he has no fear of facing Manchester United - even after their annihilation of Roma on Tuesday.

"We're a completely different side to Roma and we'll try to make it very hard for them," Bouazza told BBC Sport.

"We just need to go out and do our thing. We'll try to cause them a few problems and hopefully we can come away with a win."

In a testing season for his side, left winger Bouazza is the club's top scorer with seven.

"It makes me proud to be the top scorer at the club," he said.

"I've been working hard on a few things and it seems to be coming together.

"It's the best season I've had so far, but the season's not finished yet. I still want a few more goals and I just want to see how far I can go."

Born in the Paris suburb of Evry, Bouazza was at Auxerre until the age of 18 but after failing to make the grade, he returned to Paris without a club.

His agent told him there was one English club willing to take a look, and Bouazza eventually earned a place at the Watford academy.

Not surprisingly, his hero is Thierry Henry - a fellow graduate of the famously tough Paris suburbs.

"I saw Thierry once and he just told me to work hard and never give up," said Bouazza.

The only game I have on my mind is Saturday - then we think about the Premiership

It is advice Bouazza has heeded.

Quick, powerful and with the ability to take on defenders, Bouazza's unpredictability was as much a curse as a blessing as he attempted to tie down a regular first-team place - that is, until this season, Watford's first in the top flight since his arrival.

His performances prompted Algeria to enquire as to his availability for their national team.

Having initially turned them down, Bouazza relented when he was called up in February this year and made his debut against Libya.

Barring a miracle, Bouazza seems likely to be plying his trade in the Championship next season - not that the determined 22-year-old is ready to start thinking about that just yet.

"The only game I have on my mind is Saturday," he said.

"That is our focus. Then we can start thinking about the Premiership again and trying to get some results in the last five games of the season."
