Southend United midfielder Kane Ferdinand has signed a two-and-a-half-year professional deal at Roots Hall.
The 18-year-old cousin of England and Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has featured 14 times since making his debut on New Year's Day.
He has also become a member of the Republic of Ireland Under-19 side.
"I'm really pleased to have got the deal finalised and for Kane to be signed on," Shrimpers boss Paul Sturrock told the club website.
"He's got a bright future in the game and he has already established himself as an important member of our squad.
"There were other sides interested in securing him next season from higher divisions so we are glad that Kane has decided to commit himself to this football club so he can continue his development at Roots Hall."
We will be speaking to the Irish FA to see what, if anything, can be done. Hopefully we can have Kane available for the weekend

Ferdinand broke into the first team in a 2-0 win at Oxford at the beginning of the year, and scored his only goal for the club in February's 3-2 win over Wycombe.
The Southend youth product is set to miss this weekend's league clash with Stockport because of international commitments, but Sturrock says he is hoping the youngster will be allowed to feature for the Shrimpers.
"We will be speaking to the Irish FA to see what, if anything, can be done," he added.
"Hopefully we can have Kane available for the weekend."
