Woodward (left) admits he wants to become a manager

Reports had suggested Redknapp was on the verge of quitting as Saints manager because of Woodward's role at the club.

Rugby World Cup-winning coach Woodward was appointed performance director at Southampton three months ago.

"I have no problem with Clive, we get on fine. We want to clear the air once and for all," he said at a specially-arranged news conference.

Redknapp, who resigned as Portsmouth manager last season because of the interference of director of football Vladimir Zajec, added: "There's been so much written about how we don't get on.

"We want to get on with the important thing, which is to get this club back into the Premiership.

"There has not been one problem. Clive does not come in and tell me 'you should do that, you should play him', and everyone knows I wouldn't stand for that.

"Clive is here to help with the youngsters and does not interfere with me in any way.

"Clive is a high-profile person so we know you are always going to get these stories. He's given up rugby and wants to try his hand at football.

On Monday, Woodward said he wanted to work with Southampton's first team, although he admitted it would not happen "for months".

And he said he wanted to eventually become a manager.

Redknapp said: "He may turn into a top manager, he may not, only time will tell. But there is absolutely no problem."

And referring to his exit from Fratton Park in December 2004, Redknapp said: "That was a completely different situation.

"A director of football comes in and tells you what players to bring in.

"Clive is not a director of football, so he doesn't do that. He is not stupid enough to try and pick the team. He works on other aspects of the club."

Woodward insisted he was still learning the ropes in his embryonic football career.

"Harry has given me an opportunity and I took it with both hands," he said.

"I am determined not to let him down. If he said to me tomorrow it wasn't working, I'd be off.

"I've had a fantastic first couple of months. Everyone seems happy, the team's doing well so the stories don't reflect what's going on behind the scenes.

"I've learned a huge amount already. I'm doing some coaching, I have a course this week towards my coaching badge and it's going well."
