Turner handed Owls post
Chris Turner has enjoyed success with Hartlepool
Chris Turner has been confirmed as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager.
The former Hartlepool boss was unveiled at a news conference at Hillsborough on Thursday.
And he immediately set his sights high by revealing his ambition to take Wednesday into Europe within five years. However, he stressed that his first focus will be on lifting the club from their current position of second bottom in Division One.
He said: "I would love to take Wednesday into the Premiership but the first task is to keep us in this division. "It's a similar task to when I joined Hartlepool and had to keep them in the Football League, but I have confidence in myself and the players we already have to achieve that."
Turner, who played in goal for Wednesday during two separate spells as a player, was given permission to speak to his old club after Hartlepool agreed a compensation package for his services. The 44-year old has turned the Third Division side around since taking over at the Victoria Ground in 1999, guiding them to three successive play-offs. And he said: "This is the only club I would have left Hartlepool United for at this particular time. "I might have thought I could win the Third Division championship and then in the summer there might have been three or four jobs which were good for me. "But you get a gut feeling for some things and this is my club, this is my city."
Victoria Ground chairman Ken Hodcroft said of his outgoing manager: "This is a personal goal achieved by Chris and reward for all his excellent work at Hartlepool." Wednesday moved for Turner after failing to persuade sacked Sunderland boss Peter Reid to take over from Yorath. Reid, who has emerged as a contender for the Republic of Ireland job, said the Hillsborough post was "the right job at the wrong time". |
