Ferguson aiming high with Posh
By Pete Oliver

When you grow up at Manchester United, you are bound to be used to the best.

Not surprisingly then, Darren Ferguson is unfazed in his position as manager of League Two big spenders Peterborough United.

"I am quite comfortable with that. It's not a problem and comes with the job," Ferguson told BBC Sport.

"I have got a chairman, like myself, who wants to get out of this league as quickly as we can.

"He has been fantastic and done everything to help me. He has funded a lot of big deals and allowed me to get on with it.

"I have got to make sure I deliver and get us promotion."

London Road and Old Trafford might be poles apart but under chairman Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough have become the big fish of the bottom division.

After some major investment last season, notably on former Stevenage forward George Boyd, the Posh struck deals for around half-a-million pounds during the January transfer window.

Striker Liam Hatch arrived from Barnet for a fee that could reach £150,000, while goalkeeper Joe Lewis was a £400,000 club record buy from Norwich City.

The immediate aim is repayment with promotion.

But for Ferguson, who has also nurtured former non-League talent and members of Peterborough's youth set-up within his side, it is not just about a quick fix.

"You have got to have a belief and look at it long term. The chairman and I have got goals," added the former Manchester United, Wolves and Wrexham midfielder.

"It's a difficult league to get out of but I feel we've got a chance.

"And with the chairman we have, I'm sure that if we do get out we'll have a real go.

"There's not much difference between this division and the one above us so if we do get out of this league we could get out of the next one as well."

If Peterborough do go up, the restrictions of a 65% wage cap will ease and Ferguson believes the club is geared up for higher grade football.

"We are in a good catchment area. The wheels are in motion regarding a new stadium. The club is in a positive mood at the moment," he added.

That said, Ferguson, 35, is not counting his chickens as he continues the rebuilding job he started just over a year ago in his first managerial job.

Last season he almost dragged Peterborough into the play-offs and since then has added half-a-dozen new faces to put the club on the edge of the automatic promotion spots with games in hand.

"We have changed quite a bit since I came in last year and I think this season has gone okay so far," he said.

"We are doing alright. There is still a large part of the season to go but we are in a decent enough position.

"We have got a team that can play quick-tempo football and a lot of players that are capable of scoring goals. That's an important part of it.

"The biggest disappointment is that we have not been able to have a settled back four because of injuries and suspensions.

"If we had had (Chris) Westwood and (Craig) Morgan together all the time we would have probably been nearer the top. They bring the best out of each other."

To reach the top Peterborough would have to overhaul current leaders MK Dons, managed by Paul Ince.

To add to the plot another contender comes in the shape of Rotherham, whose boss is also a former Manchester United team-mate of Ferguson in Mark Robins.

It is a good natured rivalry as the three know each other well and a further demonstration that playing for Alex Ferguson at United has proved the ideal grounding for later life in management.

"It's no coincidence when you know the type of people he had at the club. One thing he always tried to bring to the club was winners," said the younger Ferguson.

"It's no surprise that a lot of people he had under him have become managers and the list is getting longer.

"There's now three in our division. It would be good if we could all do it."
