Owen poised for Newcastle return

Owen has only scored once since the turn of the year

Caretaker boss Chris Hughton is hoping Michael Owen can guide Newcastle to safety with the striker set to return for Saturday's trip to Hull.

Owen, 29, has missed five games with an ankle problem and during that time the Magpies have slipped to one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

"You want your big players around the squad and Michael is one of those," Hughton told The Journal.

"To have him available is a boost for us going into the Hull game."

Hughton added: "For numerous teams between now and the end of the season, the ability to score goals will be crucial to where they end up.

"Michael isn't just one of the best strikers in the Premier League, he is one of the best strikers around anywhere. You have to look at his record.

"These have been tough times for Michael regarding injuries but the one thing that remains consistent is that, when he plays, he scores goals.

"That's testimony to the type of player he is."

Owen, who also had a groin operation during the last month, has scored 30 goals in 70 appearances for the club, with 10 of those coming this season.

His last goal came in 2-2 home draw against West Ham on 10 January.
