Hungarian Under-21 midfielder Krisztian Vadocz has secured a loan deal with Motherwell until the end of the season.
The 21-year-old impressed manager Maurice Malpas in a closed-doors match on Tuesday after receiving clearance to play from previous club Auxerre.
Malpas said: "I took a call from an agent on Saturday about another player, but he told me about Krisztian.
"I phoned a couple of people and they told me that he is an excellent player."
Malpas called on his own experience as Scotland Under-21 manager in scouting Vadocz.
"He was the captain of the Hungarian Under-21 side and I remember being in charge of a Scotland side who got thumped by them and thought he must be decent enough," he told his club website.
"It has been a big surprise that we managed to get anything done."
Vadocz has joined on loan until the end of the season.
Malpas stressed that it was unlikely that anyone would leave the club before the closure of the transfer window.
"I have little chance to get anyone in," he said.
"Therefore, we are not planning on anyone going out. It will take an offer of decent money to get any of our players to move."
Meanwhile, Malpas reported that striker Ross McCormack, missing for a number of months following a virus, played the bulk of the closed-doors game, scoring twice.
