McDermott enjoyed a 20-year playing career at Grimsby.
Former Grimsby Town full-back John McDermott has said he would be "thrilled" to be named as manager of the Mariners if he was asked.
McDermott, who played more than 700 games for the club, is one of the favourites to replace Mike Newell.
He told BBC Radio Humberside: "Obviously I would be thrilled to become the manager of Grimsby Town."
McDermott is currently employed as a sports coach at a higher education college in the town.
"I have a good boss at my work and I don't want to do anything without speaking to him first," McDermott added.
Newell was dismissed by Grimsby chairman John Fenty 24 hours after a defeat to Rochdale pushed them into the relegation zone of League Two.
The former Blackburn Rovers and Everton forward lasted just over a year in charge at Blundell Park, and lead the club away from relegation trouble last season.
But since the start of the season's new campaign, his side managed just three league victories .
Former Hull City star Dean Windass is also thought to be interested in the vacancy at Blundell Park, following a nine-game-stay as player-assistant at Darlington, the team who sit beneath the Mariners in the table.
