Newell has had time to assess the squad since taking over on 6 October
Grimsby manager Mike Newell is looking to increase the strength of his squad after watching his side draw for the third time since he joined the club.
Luton scored late on Tuesday to make it 2-2 and deny Grimsby a first win.
Newell told BBC Radio Humberside: "The league table doesn't lie and it reflects what you are capable of.
"We need competition for places and we need to strengthen all over the place but not because of what the lads are doing but for competition for places."
Newell has watched his side draw at home to Wycombe and Luton and away at Exeter since he took over from the sacked Alan Buckley earlier this month and he has now had time to have a look at the depth in the first team squad at Grimsby.
He has been throwing young players in at the deep end but now says he probably needs to bring some new players to the club.
"I know we need to strengthen if we're to take the club beyond where they are and that's the idea. I think we can be more physical in certain areas."
