Stimson hopeful of keeping Royce

Veteran Royce joined Gillingham from QPR in 2007

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson believes keeper Simon Royce will sign his new contract within the next week.

The 36-year-old had raised concerns at the time it was taking to see the deal, after arranging a contract weeks ago.

Stimson told BBC Radio Kent: "The chairman's been busy, but Simon's had my word on it and if he can't take my word that does surprise me."

Royce has been sidelined in recent weeks for the League One strugglers because of an ankle injury.

The keeper's present contract runs out in May, but the Gills boss is confident Royce and defender Danny Cullip will be signed up for next season soon.

Out-of-favour striker Gary Mulligan could also have a long-term future at Priestfield, but Stimson has warned he must have the right attitude.

"We've an option on Gary, and we'll be speaking to him after the season. That's when that word comes out again - honesty. What do you really want to do? How much do you want to play for this football club? And we'll see what his answer is."
