Gateshead boss Ian Bogie says his side's impressive 1-0 defeat of promotion hopefuls Luton Town is evidence of their progress.

Jon Shaw's early header handed the Tynesiders the win and Bogie acknowledged his players' efforts in sealing the famous win.

"If you had said three or four years ago we'd beat Luton they'd have laughed at you," Bogie told BBC Newcastle.

"We've got them at home here and it shows how far we've come."

Bogie added: "Little Gateshead, it's like David and Goliath here today, they've got a vast resources, a great fanbase and a big squad, they are undoubted title favourites and we've put on a great show.

"It's a great days and a historic victory for Gateshead."

Shaw's header extended his rich vein of form for Gateshead following his summer move from Mansfield Town.

The forward missed pre-season with injury but on his return to the side has impressed in his partnership with fellow summer signing Gary Mulligan.

"He's got three goals in his last four games, and that's what we brought him to the club for," said Bogie.

"He's always a menace in the air, and he showed that, it was a great delivery from Martin Brittain who put some great deliveries into the box and a fantastic header.

"He caused them problems with Gary Mulligan, who had to come out with a pull of the groin, and we've had some outstanding performances."

Under Bogie's leadership, Gateshead rose to the top level of non-league football with two successive promotions, and ensured a second season in the Blue Square Bet Premier with survival last season.
