Crewe keeper Steve Phillips pushing for recall

Steve Phillips has been out of action for Crewe Alexandra since mid-April

Crewe Alexandra keeper Steve Phillips is keen to take on loan man Rhys Taylor for the number one jersey at Gresty Road after returning from injury.

Taylor originally arrived to fill in while Phillips recovered from a shoulder operation in the summer.

But Phillips, 32, who signed a two-year deal this summer after initially joining Crewe on loan, is fit again.

"I don't think Rhys has done much wrong, but I aim to be back as number one," Phillips told BBC Radio Stoke."

Phillips has played one reserve game since returning to full training, against Barrow. And he was also involved in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Liverpool at their Melwood training ground.

"Then it's a case of how long it takes to get back in the team," he added.

"At my age, I don't want to be sat on the bench, so we'll have to judge that as we go. "

Phillips, who first arrived from Bristol Rovers 11 months ago, has been out for five months, having played his last first team game for the Alex in mid-April, in the 1-1 draw at home to Aldershot.

Adam Legzdins then stood in for the final three games of last season, before Taylor arrived from Chelsea.

The young Welshman has been an ever present this season. But, having let in just 10 goals in his first 11 games this season, Crewe have now shipped another 10 in their last three matches.
