Williams has also played at Coventry, Chesterfield and Crewe Alex
Colchester United's latest signing Ben Williams believes his new club are capable of a top-six finish.
The 26-year-old goalkeeper signed for the U's from fellow League One side Carlisle on a two-year deal last week.
"It's a team that looks like it's geared for a good promotion push this year," he told BBC Essex.
"A top-six finish is what we're all aiming for - it's what the manager wants, it's what all the staff want and what the players want."
He added: "We've got a young side and enthusiastic manager [in Paul Lambert] who has been successful in his playing career, so I just hope we can all take that on board and have a really good season.
Williams is the U's fifth summer signing, following Ashley Vincent, David Fox, Lee Beevers and Magnus Okuonghae, and he said the influx of new additions was key in his decision to sign.
"I know David Fox from my Manchester United days, and I also know Simon Hackney from Carlisle," said the former Old Trafford trainee.
"Those sort of players are good players at this level who can push on and play at a higher level, so when the club's making those sort of signings I think it shows the good intentions the manager has."
