Brabin admits to fatigue concern

Cambridge United

Cambridge United boss Gary Brabin believes his side will need to continue working on their fitness ahead of the new season.

The U's slipped to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Coventry City on Saturday.

Brabin was disappointed to see his side struggle in the heat, but was prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Brabin told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I'm reserving my judgement as we've had a really, really tough pre-season both physically and mentally."

A brace from Freddie Eastwood either side of a Danny Fox free-kick put Coventry three goals ahead before U's midfielder Ben Farrell netted a consolation from the spot.

Brabin's men are back in action against Bedford Town on Monday evening where the U's boss will again cast his eye over a number of trialists.

Midfielder Eddie Hutchinson and striker Domaine Rouse played the full 90 minutes on Saturday, whilst winger Felino Jardim came off the bench, and Brabin was impressed with what he saw.

"They all worked hard, it was another good performance in patches...a really good test," he said.

Meanwhile, striker Robbie Simpson was back at the Abbey for the first time since leaving for Coventry last summer.

Simpson's goals helped the U's avoid relegation to the Conference South in 2006-2007 and he was delighted with the welcome he received from the Cambridge faithful.

"I got a really good reception from the fans which was really pleasing," he said.

"You can see the new manager has come in and is trying to get them to pass the ball, and they played some lovely stuff."
