Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has appointed Dutch midfielder George Boateng as the club's new captain.
The 30-year-old will lead the side after Southgate's appointment as manager and retirement as a player.
Southgate said: "There were one or two others to consider, but George has the drive, desire to win and the passion.
"He'll be a good link in the dressing room, and of course I've played with him for years, so I have a good relationship with him as well."
Southgate played alongside Boateng during his time at Aston Villa and added: "He's an excellent member of the group.
"He connects with all the guys in the dressing room, whether that's the British boys or the foreign guys."
Boateng signed a new three-year deal last month, which commits him to the club until the summer of 2009.
