Wales denied Fifa award

The Wales football team have made another jump in the Fifa world ratings.

Mark Hughes' men were rewarded for their current good form by rising nine places to 52nd position.

However, the side missed out on Fifa's 'mover of the year award,' which went to World Cup quarter-finalists Senegal.

The African team had risen just 38 places to Wales' 48, but Fifa ruled that their climb had been from a higher position.

Wales are unbeaten in their last eight games, beating proud footballing nations like World Cup finalists Germany and Italy, and drawing with Argentina.

They top group nine of their Euro 2004 qualification group and are on course to reach their first major tournament since 1958.

Indeed, Mark Hughes is happy that the rankings reflect the progress made during his time in charge.

"We have had a good year and improved each time we have played," he said.

"Obviously the three qualification games are having an impact on the rankings, they are the ones that get you the points.

"I think that's the reason we have started to move in the right direction.

"In some of the games we have been absolutely outstanding, against very good opposition.

"Were pleased with the progress that we have been making, the secret now is to have the same type of year and similar level of progress next year."

That type of success has been the catalyst for the dramatic rise in support for the national side. Wales regularly play in front of sell-out crowds at the Millennium Stadium.

They have already sold out their next home game against Azerbaijan, three months before the match is due to be played.

The rise up the Fifa rankings sees them leap-frog Scotland who fall to 58th position and Northern Ireland in 103rd.

But they have some way to catch up England and Ireland, who are seventh and 14th position respectively.
