Nigel Worthington was pleased with his Northern Ireland team's display despite falling to defeat at home to Serbia.
Danko Lazovic struck the winner for the World Cup finalists with a shot in the 57th minute with Northern Ireland wasting some decent opportunities.
"I thought it was an excellent exercise and we created chances against a good Serbia team," said Worthington.
"Serbia are a good side and we stood up to them well. I was delighted with some of the football we played."
Worthington praised the impact of Celtic's Niall McGinn who made his first start in Belfast.
"I always knew there was something there, even before Niall went to Celtic," added the NI boss.
"He has something which will add to us very much.
"The good thing is we have a bunch of experienced players to help the young ones come through.
"The work-rate and shape of the team was good and it was pleasing that a lot of the players got a run-out.
"Of course we wanted to win the game but this was a useful exercise."
McGinn was thrilled to be given the man of the match award.
He said: "I was delighted to start the game, it is just disappointing to lose.
"It was pity we could not equalise.
"But hopefully games like these will help us in the next qualifiers."
