The evening was to end in disappointment for Dundee United boss Peter Houston
A late Jon Daly goal was not enough for a battling Dundee United in the Europa League play-off second leg in Athens.
AEK's Papa Bouba Diop scored a first-half header which seemed to kill off the tie.
United had hoped to overturn a 1-0 deficit in a match played only in front of 500 of their own fans.
Daly scored a close-range equaliser to give the United fans hope, but the visitors could not find a second goal to take them to the group stages.
The match, controversially moved around stadiums in Athens over the past few days, kicked off at Olympiakos' Karaiskakis Stadium and the Athenians started brightly with an early drive from Pereira Leonardo.
The fixture had been moved from AEK's Olympic Stadium due to problems with the pitch and had been re-arranged at the ground of Panionios.
However, Panionios fans, angry at the prospect of their rivals playing at their stadium, sabotaged the pitch forcing another move.
Morgaro Gomis fouled Grigoris Makos just outside the box and Argentine forward Nacho Scocco shot over the bar from the free-kick.
The hosts took the lead when Diop, making his AEK debut, rose unchallenged to meet Leonardo's corner and head the ball home.
United struggled to make an impact against a slick AEK Athens side, and Sebastian Saja in the home goal only had one save to make in the first half, a comfortable take from a Craig Conway free-kick.
Conway had also headed the ball into the net from a low Keith Watson cross, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
With the half-time whistle looming the impressive Diop rifled in a left-footed effort which flashed just past Dusan Pernis' left-hand post.
Peter Houston was forced into a change early in the second half when striker Danny Cadamarteri limped off with a groin strain to be replaced by last season's Young Player of the Year David Goodwillie.
With the second half wearing on and no sign of a clear opportunity for the Terrors, Houston replaced David Robertson with Danny Swanson - making his first appearance of the season.
Conway was given licence to roam as United went for broke, and the visitors enjoyed their best spell of the match.
Goodwillie tried an adventurous overhead kick which fell to fellow substitute Daly, but his close-range effort was deflected over the bar.
Then, from nowhere, United grabbed a lifeline when Daly prodded home a cross from full-back Paul Dixon to give the visiting fans a glimmer of hope.
The visitors pressed hard for a second goal which would take them through, and Swanson passed up a great chance when he flashed his shot just wide of the post.
