Nicky Wroe's late strike ensured Torquay overtook Macclesfield in the League Two table.
Visiting goalkeeper Jon Brain pulled off a flurry of fine saves as Torquay dominated the first period.
The home side's superiority was finally rewarded when skipper Wroe swapped passes with Chris Zebroski before driving the ball home from 20 yards.
Scott Rendell smashed a low shot off the post in stoppage time as Torquay made it five wins from six.
Torquay United manager Paul Buckle told BBC Radio Devon: "I'm absolutely thrilled, I'm absolutely delighted. It's a big win for us again.
"It would have been very easy to have come off the gas today now we're safe, but credit to the players there was no chance of that.
"My team thoroughly deserved to win, we looked exciting, we looked strong and it keeps our unbeaten run going."
Macclesfield Town manager Gary Simpson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"We knew it was going to be difficult here as they're the form team in the division, and Jonny Brain's kept us in the game.
"Maybe some of the youngsters have lost some of their edge, but I've got no complaints coming here and losing 1-0.
"The directors promised them a night out so they're going to go and have a drink tonight and enjoy themselves for their efforts."
