Chris Wood grabbed a brace as League One leaders Brighton spoiled Darren Ferguson's return as Peterborough boss.
Wood volleyed past Joe Lewis to give his side the lead, before Elliott Bennett curled one in from 18 yards.
He then grabbed his second as he poked home Glenn Murray's cross, but Lee Tomlin gave the visitors some hope as he headed in from close range.
Grant McCann earned his second yellow card of the game for a foul on Gary Dicker and Posh failed to fight back.
Brighton boss Gus Poyet told BBC Sussex: "Peterborough gave us a real test, especially in the second half. I think the victory is bigger than what the situation shows or the table shows because it was very, very important for us.
"There were nerves at the end. We have to give credit to the opposition. The victory is even more special.
"Our strikers have good momentum and I'm going to try to use them as much as I can and give chances to every single one. Games are coming thick and fast now. I need to give credit to everyone."
