Lewis Guy came off the bench to grab all three points for 10-man MK Dons in a close encounter against Hartlepool.
Five minutes after coming on, Sam Baldock's cross found Guy free in the area and he finished from close range.
Dons captain Dean Lewington was then sent off after he pulled down Leon McSweeney when through on goal.
Hartlepool thought they should have had a penalty late on when Sean O'Hanlon appeared to pull down Peter Sweeney but the Dons held on for all three points.
MK Dons manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio: "We created enough chances in the first half and the first ten minutes of the second half to be comfortably well out in front.
"We rode our luck a little bit late in the game, but I think we deserved our luck.
"That was the sort of game in the past that we might have lost. Overall it was a good club performance once again."
Hartlepool United caretaker boss Mick Wadsworth told BBC Tees: "The thing about a game plan is sticking with it, and the thing that is disappointing is one loose pass has cost us the game.
"We've had some good opportunities at their end, we had some good chances from set plays and they've gone the wrong side of the posts.
"I cannot criticise the players, I cannot criticise endeavour, effort, we'll do ok this season because the players responded very well from last Saturday.
"They had possession, but too much possession can be dangerous, and we dealt with it very well apart from the critical moment of the goal.
"This is a club that has real tight togetherness and I like that cameraderie we've got."
