Former Hartlepool defender Michael Nelson helped guide Norwich to victory on his first return to his old club.
Nelson, who spent six years at Hartlepool before moving to Norwich in the summer, scored with an acrobatic overhead kick following a free-kick.
That free-kick was taken by Paul McVeigh, who also played a part in Norwich's second when Stephen Hughes rolled the ball home on 63 minutes.
Substitute James Brown had Hartlepool's best chance but he blasted over.
Norwich manager Paul Lambert told BBC Radio Norfolk:
"I thought we started the game really well and I thought we deserved to win if the truth be known.
"This is a really tough place to come, as I said yesterday, I thought the lads were terrific.
"In League One you've sometimes got to win the battle before you win anything, and today I thought they were great."
