Simon Cox grabbed his first goal in six league games to earn 10-man West Brom a vital win over Plymouth and keep his side second in the Championship.
Cox fired home after Roman Bednar had caused problems from a Jerome Thomas cross to cap the move of the match.
Graham Dorrans saw a fifth penalty in five games saved late on after David McNamee had fouled Luke Moore, before Thomas saw red for a lunge at McNamee.
Plymouth had their chances too, Jamie Mackie volleying their best one over.
Plymouth manager Paul Mariner told BBC Radio Devon:
"We gave everything today. The players again were fantastic, but we have lost.
"Look at the crowd at the end of the game. We lost 1-0 and they were cheering us off.
"I can't tell you what spirit we have, we go a goal down and we keep fighting."
West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo:
"We are pleased with the result because we had two tough games, at Blackpool and here.
"I was pleased with the manner in which we won as well because it was a difficult pitch today. You could not really play much football on it.
"We adapted pretty well to it and we won. We are very pleased with the three points.
"It is a shame that we have not got much time to enjoy our win. We have to travel home now and then focus on Scunthorpe on Tuesday and that's the way it is. It goes on and on. It is a marathon."
