Two goals from Garry Thompson inspired Scunthorpe to victory at Derby, ending a run of 10 Championship away matches without a win dating back to September.
Gary Hooper broke the offside trap to slot home and Thompson doubled the lead with a low finish from 14 yards.
Kris Commons' deflected strike gave Derby cause for optimism and they soon had an effort cleared off the line.
But Michael O'Connor broke down the right to allow Thompson to stroke home and Jonathan Forte bundled in a fourth.
With only three matches played in English football's second tier, Scunthorpe pulled away from the relegation zone and moved level on points with the Rams, who succumbed to their sixth home defeat of the campaign.
Hooper spurned an early opportunity when he dawdled in front of goal but a minute later he calmly struck his ninth goal of the season.
On the stroke of half-time the visitors doubled their lead when Wright's long ball was missed by Miles Addison and Thompson stole in and finished emphatically.
Derby brought on Commons at the break and the Scotland international led a second-half revival, culminating in a run in which he beat several players, and though he scuffed his shot it hit Marcus Williams and wrong-footed helpless goalkeeper Josh Lillis.
Rob Hulse could have equalised but failed to connect properly from three yards, allowing Wright to make his clearance, and Scunthorpe compounded the error with the decisive double strike in the final 10 minutes.
Derby manager Nigel Clough:
"This is as low as we have been for a long time. We just don't seem to have the character out there at the moment to get back in the game. Whether it is too much for some of them I am not sure.
"There are some players who have been here two or three seasons, who in the main have lost matches.
"The loan signings (Nicky Hunt and Lee Johnson) did well. We saw the benefit of fresh people coming in who haven't been part of the losing."
Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins: "We are trying to keep positive about everything. We have got a hard-working group of players who are endeavouring to be the best they can be.
"It's about winning games, if anything we have probably been too open. It is about picking up points away from home. But three points is better than one.
"We have got belief anyway but it is a big boost. We are trying to instil that belief when others doubt it. It is about trying to keep that work ethic going and allowing the players to play without any fear."
