Nott'm Forest 0-1 Sheff Utd

Brian Howard's first goal for Sheffield United gave the visitors a hard-fought win at Nottingham Forest and moved the Blades up into the play-off places.

The goal came when Kevin Kilgallon's cross caused chaos in the box, allowing Howard to volley home from close range.

Nathan Tyson then missed a gilt-edged chance to find the equaliser when he fired wide with the goal at his mercy.

And, despite bossing possession, it was the closest the hosts came as they fell to a fourth defeat in six home games.

Nottingham Forest manager Colin Calderwood:

"We got ourselves behind - in the first half we were below par individually and we suffered the consequences because of it.

"The difference in performance from Saturday is alarming and we failed to do the necessary things tonight.

"We had a poor night with the ball and struggled to create chances."

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell on catching the top two:
"It can be done. We all have to believe that we can catch them.

"I remember when I was at Leeds and the top two had run away with it, but if we had beaten Crystal Palace with four games left we could have caught them.

"You have to believe that we can claw it back."
