Nottingham Forest picked up their first point in four matches as Charlton substitute Andy Gray wasted a great chance to snatch a win for his side.
The match was into stoppage time when Gray's close-range effort was blocked by Forest keeper Paul Smith.
Rob Earnshaw, Lee Martin and Chris Cohen went close for the hosts in the opening half.
But they had to hang on in the closing stages after Matt Thornhill was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Nottingham Forest boss Colin Calderwood:
"At half-time we felt we deserved to be in the lead but the second half was different - Charlton had a strong response to us.
"We showed admirable maturity in terms of not doing anything rash which would have left us exposed. The team gave a monumental physical effort, which was heightened in the closing stages by the sending-off.
"We showed good discipline through that period when Charlton were dominant and
still conjured up a super opportunity."
Charlton manager Alan Pardew:
"We should have had a penalty because the header was going in and it hit a hand, admittedly it was close.
"And then there was another decision where there was a clash of heads between two of their guys, which from where I was standing didn't look too bad but he stopped the game when we had an advantage.
"We had really had tough decisions go against us."
