Paul Parry scored his tenth goal of the season against the Saints
Southampton plunge deeper into relegation trouble as the Saints lose at play-off chasing Cardiff.
Paul Parry's tenth goal of the season in the sixth minute, an emphatic volley into the top corner from Steve Thompson's cross, proved decisive.
FA Cup semi-finalists Cardiff went close to extending their lead as Peter Whittingham fired over.
Peter Enckelman had to save well from Saints striker Stern John before City winger Whittingham went close late on.
• Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:
"It was important to get the three points as we didn't play as well as we can do.
"We probably enjoyed the clearer chance but Southampton are fighting for their lives and made it difficult for us.
"Our 'keeper Peter Enckelman had little to do but Southampton tried to nullify our strengths by sitting five across the midfield to make it hard for us to play free-flowing football."
• Southampton manager Nigel Pearson:
"That was a missed opportunity for us as I thought we could come here and win.
"I have a lot of positives to take out of this game and can look forward to our next match with a little more confidence but we have to take our chances and cannot make any excuses for the defeat."
