A second-half goal from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake gave Plymouth victory against struggling Hull.
The striker fired into the bottom corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area after Lilian Nalis' cross from the left.
He also went close in the first half with a firm effort from inside the area, forcing Boaz Myhill into making a smart save.
Hull's Stephen McPhee's made Luke McCormick tip around the post late on.
Plymouth manager Ian Holloway:
"It was a horrible match - not pretty - but that was a special goal and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake deserved it.
"It's not what my players always do on the ball that counts but what they do off it as well and Sylvan worked his socks off - and then got his reward.
"I thought for the youngest side that we have probably ever put out, certainly at Championship level, we did fantastically well. We got three points.
"Of course the bad news is that Paul Wotton is injured. He will take some replacing in there. It looks long term."
Hull City caretaker manager Phil Brown:
"If the players continue to show the commitment they showed then it will certainly give me a better chance of becoming the next manager.
"I understand we are in the results business and if I can buy the chairman a bit of time of making the right decision about the next manager then that's my job done.
"If I do that it will mean we are winning games and give me a better chance. "I am quite positive. The players showed a level of commitment that I was satisfied with in a very difficult week for everybody involved at the club."
