Adrian Patulea's goal was enough for Hayes & Yeading to condemn Darlington to their third successive defeat.
Patulea fired the away side into the lead with a fine right-footed strike after a period of Darlington pressure.
The visitors should have doubled their lead when Lee Brown missed the target from six yards.
Jefferson Louis came closest to equalising for Darlington late on but his header was easily saved by United keeper Josh Lennie.
