Rushden & Diamonds had to bide their time before seeing off Histon thanks to second-half goals from Justin Miller and Aaron O'Connor.
Histon goalkeeper Joe Welch pulled off superb saves to keep out a Ryan Charles volley and O'Connor's angled effort.
But Miller broke the deadlock, netting from the edge of the area following Craig Farrell's cutback from the right.
Rushden's Max Porter's then hit the bar with a snapshot before O'Connor powered home Jamie Day's cross from 12 yards.
