'Gutted' Jones out of Ashes series
A distraught Jones is led off the Gabba
England fast bowler Simon Jones believes he will get over the serious knee injury that has cut short his Ashes tour.
Jones ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee after falling awkwardly chasing a ball on the opening day of the first Test in Brisbane.
But the 23-year-old insisted he would not be beaten by the latest in a series of injuries that has blighted his career. "I'd started the game well and was feeling good. Obviously, I'm gutted about what's happened but it's something that I feel I can get over," he said.
"I've come back from those injuries so I'm backing myself to come back from this too." An England spokesman said Jones would undergo surgery once he returned home. But the injury is so serious he will not be able to travel back for at least another two weeks. It is thought he will be out of the game for at least six months. It is a desperate blow for the Glamorgan bowler, who suffered a side strain during his Test debut against India at Lord's in the summer.
This was his first international appearance since recovering from that injury. "I was fielding at mid-on to Ricky Ponting when it happened," Jones recalled. "The ball went past me and I just went into a regulation slide after it.The grass is different here though - it's more sandy-based because they play Aussie Rules football on the same surface. "My studs caught and I landed awkwardly on my right knee. It didn't really hurt that much to be honest. "I just knew there was something wrong immediately and that I had to lay still and wait for [physio] Kirk Russell to come onto the field." It now seems likely that Alex Tudor will stay with the England squad for the rest of the tour after being called up from Adelaide because of Darren Gough's knee problems. Fletcher said a decision on whether to send for extra reinforcements would be taken in the next few days.
