England women claim series
Claire Taylor

Third women's one-day international, Cardiff: South Africa 147 all out lost to England 148-1 by nine wickets runs
England win series 2-1

England turned around Saturday's defeat in emphatic fashion to claim the one-day series in the deciding match in Cardiff.

Beaten by 11 runs in Bristol, England bowled the visitors out cheaply before easing to victory with more than 15 overs to spare.

The early loss of Charlotte Edwards for 12 was the only setback for the hosts, with Laura Newton scoring a majestic 77 not out, her second successive half-century.

Newton, with 11 boundaries to her name, put on 113 unbroken runs with Claire Taylor, who hit a swashbuckling 46 not out off 58 balls.

But the victory was set up by an excellent display in the field, with spearhead Lucy Pearson (3-14) and 19-year-old off-spinner Rosalie Birch (4-22) doing most of the damage.

After losing both openers cheaply, South Africa had sunk to 19-2 early on.

But Daleen Terblanche and Alison Hodgkinson steadied the ship with a dogged 55-run partnership.

The visitors were 74-3 when Terblanche fell to Laura Spragg for 37, and still in fairly good shape on 102-4 when Newton bowled Shandre Fritz for 11.

But South Africa quickly capitulated, losing their last six wickets for 31 runs with only Hodgkinson offering any resistance.

She was unbeaten on 52 (off 118 balls) when Birch finished off the tail in the final over of the innings.

The second and final Test match of the tour begins on Wednesday at Taunton.

England: RA Birch, CJ Connor, CM Edwards, L Greenway, HJ Lloyd, LK Newton, LC Pearson, J Smit, L Spragg, CE Taylor, SC Taylor.

South Africa: CZ Brits, SA Fritz, AL Hodgkinson, APC Kilowan, J Logtenberg, N Ndzundzu, AE Smith, M Terblanche, Y van der Merwe, C van der Westhuizen, SSD van Zyl.
