Notts to sign Somerset's Edwards

Somerset opener Neil Edwards will join Nottinghamshire for next season after agreeing a three-year deal.

Edwards, 25, was ever-present in Somerset's promotion-winning team in 2007 scoring 1,251 runs, but he has not played a first-team game in 2009.

Notts coach Mick Newell said: "We desperately need some opening batsmen that can perform and give us stability at the top of our batting order.

"Neil is a player I have been aware of for a couple of years."

Former England Under-19 batsman Edwards, who averages 35 from 49 first-class matches, is not allowed to play for Notts' first team this summer. But Newell revealed that he should see some action in the seconds.

"He can't play for us until next season," said Newell. "But Somerset decided they wanted to make it known now he wasn't going to continue his career with them.

"He may play some cricket for us between now and the end of the season but not in the first team."

Notts have already brought in one new opener, Scott Newman, who hit 87 on his debut against Somerset at Taunton over the weekend after signing on loan from Surrey.
