Hinds will miss Derbyshire's first County Championship game
|
West Indian batsman Wavell Hinds has received his visa to allow him to return to Derbyshire this season. The Jamaican, 32, was delayed in his return to the UK because of a change in policy which meant his visa had to be issued in his home country. Having initially joined Derbyshire as an overseas player last year, Hinds was subsequently granted Kolpak status. He is expected to play in Derbyshire's opening home game at the County Ground against Surrey, beginning on 22 April. However, he will miss their first Championship game, at Essex on Wednesday, 15 April - as will captain Chris Rogers, an Australian who is also waiting for his visa to come through.

Hinds, who played in 45 Tests and 114 one-day internationals for the Windies, averaged 31.30 with the bat for Derbyshire last season, also capturing 10 first-class wickets with his medium pace. The left-hander's arrival at Derbyshire in 2008 was marred by controversy after the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) initially blocked his Kolpak registration because of his involvement in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League (ICL). He was then registered by the county as an overseas player - but the ECB then backtracked on its decision to bar ICL players, allowing him to extend his stay as a Kolpak player. The Kolpak ruling allows players from countries with associate trade agreements with the European Union - notably South Africans and West Indians who are no longer involved in international cricket - to play county cricket without being classed as overseas players.
