Suppiah clips one off his legs in compiling 78 not out
|
Arul Suppiah hit an unbeaten 78 as Somerset built a steady reply to Yorkshire's first-innings 405 on day two at Taunton. He shared 100 for the third wicket with Zander de Bruyn (47) and half-century stands with Marcus Trescothick and James Hildreth as they closed on 226-4. Earlier, Yorkshire, 296-4 overnight, had David Wainwright (39) to thank for passing 400. Ben Phillips ended with 4-76 and Murali Kartik 3-106 on his Somerset debut. They were the left-arm spinner's first wickets for the county and helped to wrap up the visitors' tail. Yorkshire failed to build substantially on their first-day efforts and it needed a last-wicket stand of 46 between Wainwright and Oliver Hannon-Dalby to see them past 400. It was Hannon-Dalby who then claimed the prize wicket of Marcus Trescothick (39), trapping the Somerset captain lbw playing across a slower delivery. Nick Compton was caught off an inside edge off Steven Patterson before Suppiah and De Bruyn's century stand was ended by Adil Rashid, who also had Hildreth (31) caught at mid-off. But Suppiah held firm, having reached a patient half-century off 134 balls, with seven fours.
